What is MTSS?
MTSS stands for Multi-Tiered Systems of Support.
In the past, Swartz Creek Community Schools had referred to our RtI (Response to Intervention) and PBiS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) systems as methods for tiered or layered interventions and supports for our students. Since those early years, our building-level support systems have evolved into a comprehensive system that has been fully integrated into what we now refer to as MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) which includes all of our support systems (e.g. reading, writing, math, behavior, etc.) that offer the necessary assistance for our students to make sustained progress.
Through the Swartz Creek MTSS process we ensure the following components are evident in all that we do:
Evidence-based: The fundamental components of the MTSS framework are backed by decades of evidence through educational research demonstrating the impact it has on improving student outcomes.
βMulti-tiered: The MTSS framework spans a continuum of support to meet students where they are and build on the academic and behavioral strengths they bring to school each day.
βProblem-solving: MTSS requires a process of continuous improvement. As problems emerge, there are systems to identify goals, define problems with precision, implement a plan of action, evaluate the planβs impact, and make changes as needed.
Team-based: The work of implementing MTSS isnβt accomplished by a single building leader or coordinator. It requires a team of people, representing the larger schoolwide community that can collaborate together for the most effective solutions.
Our current MTSS structure requires essential personnel at all levels of our District to keep the system vital and responsive for student success. Please review the following overview of our District structure:
MTSS Team | Essential Functions |
---|---|
District Implementation Team | Review District capacity for maintaining MTSS and remove barriers to implementation. |
District Instructional Team | Make recommendation plans for implementation of new initiatives and plan adjustments for existing systems. |
District Instructional Coaching Team | Advise the instructional team and serve as facilitator for building-level teams. Provide direct coaching to classroom teachers and support staff for implementing interventions. |
Building-Level Leadership Teams | Monitor building system and make adjustments to ensure student interventions are making a positive impact. |
District-Level MTSS Team | All teams combined which meet at trimesters during school year to review implementation needs. |
MTSS Communication Needs?
Our MTSS heavily relies on a reliable flow of accurate information and data to ensure systems are operating optimally. Each of our teams have specific responsibilities for communicating with personnel regarding personnel. Support personnel not tightly linked to any of the listed teams can benefit from reviewing the quarterly MTSS newsletter entitled MTSS Insider or consider contacting our District MTSS Coordinator directly at (scook@swcrk.org).
Our District also regularly addresses "Monitor & Adjust" functions in the state MICIP platform for our District continuous improvement plans which are fully aligned with our MTSS. Our current goals address the following three topic areas:
Trauma-Informed Care
Formative Assessment
Teacher Efficacy
